Using Keyword Filter and Bulk Edit to Update Destination URLs (Tool Tip)

Posted by: Vernon Steward on Mar 02, 2009 2 Comments

As Hanny mentioned a couple of weeks ago, landing page load time is one of the factors AdWords uses to calculate Quality Scores. To keep load times down, destination URLs should generally not redirect users to another page: if your destination URLs don’t lead directly to your landing pages, they will take that much longer to load. Even if you didn’t deliberately use a redirect page as a default URL when you added keywords, an update to your site might cause direct URLs to become redirects. In the past, updating these URLs would have required making changes to each of your keywords across multiple search networks. With Clickable’s new “Keyword Filter and Bulk Edit” tool, you can update these default URLs in a few simple steps.

The first thing you need to do is click the “KEYWORD FILTER & BULK EDIT” button at the top right of any Manage page. A new window will pop up, listing every one of your keywords across all search networks, as well as a number of metrics about those keywords. You’ll notice that “Destination URL” isn’t there. But while it’s not one of the columns that appears by default, it’s easy to add. All you need to do is click on the “Select Columns >” link …

… deselect one of the default fields (like “Conversion Rate”) and check “Destination URL” instead …

… click “SUBMIT,” and “Destination URL” appear as a column in the “Optional Column Section.”

(A maximum of nine columns appear in the “Optional Column” section, and you can always mix and match them using the steps described above.)
The next step is to filter the list down to the keywords that default to your old destination URL. Just type that URL into the “Destination URL” field …

… click “FILTER” at the upper-right of the wizard …

… and you will see a filtered list with only those keywords that have your old URL listed as their default.

The last step is to change all of those URLs to the new one.  First, select all the keywords in the list by checking the box at the top left to “Select All”…

… click on the “SET DESTINATION URL” button …

… enter a new destination URL …

… and click “SAVE!”

The default destination URL for every keyword you selected will be updated, and you should see a tick up in your Quality Score over the coming weeks. Please note that bulk changes apply only to the selected keyword on each filter results page and a maximum of 200 keywords can be viewed per fliter results page.

This is only one of the many time-saving functions you can perform with the Keyword Filter and Bulk Edit tool. For more details on the tool, check out our Product Guide.  Better yet, go to the Manage section and try it out yourself!
