Using Clickable's ActMap to Identify Your Cost and Revenue Drivers (Tool Tip)

Spreadsheet analysis is one of the most time-consuming and tedious aspects of search marketing, often referred to as search engine marketing's "dirty little secret". At Clickable, we're always looking for ways to replace spreadsheets with simpler and more effective tools, and to make your data actionable so you improve performance. Marketers often use spreadsheets to determine the relative value of their keywords: Which keywords are driving my costs? Which are driving revenues? Which keywords have the highest conversion rate? Which have the highest return on ad spend (ROAS)? This is exactly what Clickable's ActMap shows you, providing a unique visual lens into the top keywords driving key performance metrics. (The ActMap also shows you exactly which keywords need attention, by integrating one-click recommendations.)

The ActMap is a "tree map" of the top 100 keywords in your account for a selected metric. (The metrics you can choose from include Cost, Impressions, Clicks, CTR, Conversions, Conversion Rate, Revenue and ROAS.) Each of the keywords appears in a separate box: those with the highest values for the metric are larger and appear toward the top left, and those with lowest values are smaller and appear toward the bottom right. This is easy to visualize, as the ActMap itself is completely intuitive:

As you can see in the image above, I've selected "Conv. Rate" as my metric, and the keyword with the highest conversion rate ― "Paid Search Service" ― is in the box at the upper-left. The ActMap uses Clickable's standard ActEngine severity rating, and the box is orange because there's a medium-severity alert for that keyword. When I click on the box, I get more details about that keyword, including the campaign and ad group it's in and a few significant data points: cost, revenue, average position, average cost per click (CPC) and conversion rate. (The first four items always appear; the last is the metric you've selected.)

Most importantly, an "ACT!" button appears in the pop-out when you click on the box, because there is a recommendation for this keyword. Click on that button and you can act on the recommendation right away.

Using a spreadsheet to find the same information is much more tedious: you have to export your account data; load the CSV file into Excel; set your auto-filters and sort by "Conv. rate." This will produce a chart with the information you need, but you'll probably want to convert it into a graph of some kind to get a better view of your data...

With Clickable's ActMap, you get a clear, immediate visual snapshot of the main keywords driving your business, and the ability to take action to improve performance with just one click.
